Ralph Schreiber

Deceased Classmate: Math teacher Ralph Schreiber
Date Of Birth:
Date Deceased: Sept.-28-1964
Age at Death: 38?
Cause of Death: apparent suicide
Classmate City: Colorado Springs
Classmate State: CO
Classmate Country: USA
Survived By: He was survived by his wife, a daughter and a son, whose names I cannot remember.

He was found dead in his basement in Stratton Meadows, apparently from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. I attended his funeral at the Pauline Chapel in the Broadmoor along with several 1962 classmates and many others from Harrison H.S. He graduated from Ransom H.S. in Ransom, Kansas in 1944, then Kansas State College with a mathematics degree, and later received a Master's degree from Colorado College. Mr. Schreiber expanded the course offerings in Mathematics at Harrison beyond Algebra II when he started teaching Advanced Mathematics (basically Set Theory and Introductory Calculus) from written notes before he had a textbook for the course, in the Fall of 1961, I believe, when I took the course. He was a wonderful teacher and human being, and my inspiration to start my freshman year at the Univ. of Colorado with a declared major in Applied Mathematics Engineering, though I did not finish out in that field. Two sources of information on him come from his H.S. alumni association: www.rabwp.com/books/1964.pdf and www.rabwp.com/books/2004.pdf Also there is a Gazette article about his death that I could not access without paying a fee: http://www.newspapers.com/newspage/63516430/

Ralph Schreiber was an outstanding math teacher and inspiration to his students. The 1961 Harrison High School Annual was dedicated to him:

"With the words, 'Our sponsor, teacher, and friend,' we describe him, the person who had helped us most to make our high school years successful.  In his two years as sponsor of the senior class, he has worked diligently to help us with money-making projects and class activities.  He has constantly assisted us in planning and carrying them to completion.  As friend, guide, and sponsor, always with a ready smile and willing hand, he has guided us successfully through our high school years.  In grateful appreciation for the assistance he has given us, the senior class of 1961 respectfully dedicates this annual to Mr. Ralph Schreiber."
