Phillip L. Mallory II (1970)

MY BROTHER ROBERT MALLORY WAS AN AMAZING MAN WHO LEFT US FAR TOO SOON. HIS SMILE WAS INFECTIOUS AND HAD CHARISMA THAT LIT UP EVERY ROOM HE ENTERED. AFTER HE CHARMED HARRISON HE HAD THE CADETS AT WEST POINT CONTINUALLY ROLLICKING AS BABY BROTHER ON THE CADET RADIO STATION. AFTER A SABATICAL AT CSU HE RETURNED TO WEST POINT TO GRADUATE IN 1978. ROBERT UNDAUNTED BY HIS SMALL SIZE WAS FEARLESS AS HIS RUGBY TEAMMATES WOULD READILY ATTEST. IN THE ARMY, ROBERT CHOSE TO FLY THE DANGEROUS SKIES AS A SPECIAL OPERATIONS HELICOPTER PILOT WITH THE NIGHTSTALKERS(160TH SOAR-THE UNIT DEPICTED IN THE MOVIE BLACKHAWK DOWN). ROBERT MET DEATH FLYING SOLO IN HIS LITTLE BIRD OVER THE WEST VA MOUNTAINS ENROUTE TO THE PENTAGON FROM FORT CAMPBELL KY FOR A PRIORITY MEETING. INCLEMENT WEATHER FORCED HIS CHOPPER DOWN(22 FEB 1993) AND MY HEART WAS FOREVER BROKEN FOR HE WAS MY HERO. WERE IT NOT FOR THIS UNTIMELY TRAGEDY, HE MOST CERTAINLY WOULD HAVE BEEN THE FIRST MALLORY TO MAKE GENERAL SIMPLY BECAUSE HE WAS SUCH A SUPERSTAR. A POSTHUMOUS LEGION OF MERIT WAS THE REWARD FOR THIS GREAT MAN WHO GAVE HIS LAST FULL MEASURE OF DEVOTION. HE WAS SURVIVED BY HIS WIFE PATTY AND THREE CHILDREN(BOBBY, LAUREN, AND NICHOLAS) BOBBY IS THE SPITTING IMAGE OF HIS DAD. NIGHTSTALKERS NEVER QUIT!! AS A TESTAMENT TO ROBERT'S INCREDIBLE COURAGE IN THE FACE OF CONSTANT PERIL AND WILLINGNESS TO MAKE THE ULTIMATE SACRIFICE, FOUR MEMBERS OF THE 160TH SOAR PERISHED IN A BLACKHAWK HELICOPTER CRASH ON THE EAST SIDE OF MT MASSIVE NEAR LEADVILLE, CO ON WED. 19 AUGUST 2009. AS LONG AS WE HAVE SOLDIERS WILLING TO EMULATE ROBERT'S DEVOTION TO DUTY, THIS COUNTRY WILL REMAIN FOREVER GREAT AND FREE. ONCE AGAIN, THE TEARS FLOW.

Phillip, thank you for posting the details about Robert's untimely death. I must echo your sentiments: I sat next to Robert in the flute section of the band starting in 7th grade. I grew to love him dearly, but from a distance. He was a wonderful man, a delight to be around, an inspiration to anyone who ever crossed his path. The world is a poorer place for his departure; the world is a much richer place that he leaves a legacy for his friends, family and especially for his children.

Greatly saddened to learn of your brother Robert's passing. Many fond memories sitting next to him in Mr Best's Geometry class and many more on the football field. He had grit and left a quite an impression on me. Grateful to have known him and awed at his academic achievement getting through West Point. I echo Lisa's kind and endearing words. He was someone worth knowing. I take comfort in the knowledge that we will meet again one day, in that amazing world to come. Thanks for sharing.

Hello Phillp Malory III

I wear my father’s badge of honor to this day because he served in the Army.  It breaks my heart to know that ROBERT MALLORY died serving our country.  On the other hand, I am proud to be in the class of 1973 because of people like Robert who sacrifice their life for OUR COUNTRY.  As a military brat, I know what it feels like to wonder, on every assignment…” Will my (father, mother, child, etc.) return home?”  I am so sorry for your loss.  I have copied your message to pray for you and Robert’s family. Thank you for such a beautiful testimony and may the Lord Bless his wife, Patty, and his three children Bobby, Lauren, and Nicholas.  Thank you for sharing.  My memory of the Mallorys (you and Robert) stands true.  I recognized your family’s outstanding character in high school and that respect remains true today.  In Loving memory, thank you!
