Graduated from the USAF Academy in 1970. Served 28 years in the Air Force. Earned MA in Middle East Studies at the Naval Post Graduate School and Defense Language Institute. Taught at the Air Force Academy (78-82) and served as the Deputy Director of Admissions at the Academy (88-91). Was speechwriter and deputy executive officer to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

After retirement, was Vice President of Communications at the Academy's Association of Graduates (99-07).
